BMW is set to unveil the next-generation of its luxury sedan, the BMW 5-series, at the Paris motor show 2016. The new car will get a more streamlined styling as compared to the current car, and will share technology with the new 7-series that made its debut internationally earlier this year.
The new 5-series will get a more prominent kidney grille with dynamic louvers that open and close as per cooling requirement, optional laser headlamps, more pronounced shoulders, LED tail-lamps and a sleeker profile with a more heavily raked rear windshield. The new 5-series will also be based on the new platform, codenamed OKL, that was introduced on the new 7-series. The car will also be around 100kg lighter due to the use of carbon fibre, magnesium, aluminium and high-tensile steel.

On the inside, the dashboard is expected to be designed like the one on the new 7-series with the same basic architecture multi-function steering wheel, switchgear and material materials. The dashboard will also feature an all-digital instrument cluster and a free-standing infotainment display.
Powering the car will be a family of 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines in varying states of tune: the 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines including a quad-turbo diesel in the M550d, the 444bhp 4.4-litre V8 from the new 7-series, plug-in hybrid powertrains from the new 7-series and X5 and the range-topping 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 for the M5. The car will come with the choice of a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic gearbox on the standard models, while the M5 will continue with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic from the current model.

In terms of technology,  the new 5-series will get the latest iDrive system with a new touchpad and touchscreen, gesture control with sensors to monitor five different hand movements, voice recognition and functions such as swipe and pinch to zoom. The car will also come with autonomous driving tech such as autonomous emergency braking, hands-off operation and anti-collision systems.

The new 5-series will be available in three body styles – sedan, Touring and GT . The sedan is the one that will make its debut at the Paris motor show. There is no confirmation as yet as to the launch dates of the other two models, though they are expected sometime in 2017.

Rolls-Royce unveil two new Special Edition models in Dubai

The Middle East, and, specially, the UAE, is one of the most lucrative markets for luxury brands, fuelled as it is by the oil boom and its position as one of the biggest shopping destinations on the planet. Recognising this, manufacturers routinely introduce special and limited edition models of their choicest products, and that is precisely what Rolls-Royce has done at the 2015 Dubai International Motor Show.

Along with the Middle East unveil of the new Dawn and the Wraith “Inspired by Music,” the BMW-owned British marquee introduced the Phantom Coupe Tiger and Ghost Golf Edition, two special editions that will appeal to those who desire to make their already-stunning bespoke machines stand out even more.

First up is the Rolls-Royce Ghost Golf. Built at the behest of AGMC, Rolls’ local importer in the UAE, the Golf edition "takes its inspiration from the fairways to appeal to discerning sportsmen, incorporating design cues and materials that evoke the history of this gentleman's sport.” It took more than two years to be realised by a team craftspeople at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England, and features a paint combination of Brooklands Green and Desert Dune that is designed to resonate with Dubai’s green golf courses set against the majestic background of the surrounding Arabian sands.

Inside, the Golf Edition features tri-colour leather in Crème Light, Pine Green and Hotspur Red accented by contrast stitching and seat piping, in addition to Lambswool floor mats, a starlight headliner and bespoke picnic tables. Tartan-lined door pockets, mahogany and persimmon wood veneers, and other special touches round out the unique treatment aimed at golf enthusiasts.

Then there’s the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe Tiger, a visually louder edition of the Phantom, with a Burnt Orange and Arizona Sun two-tone paint job highlighted by the Tiger motif twin coachline. Inside, things are a bit toned down - the cabin is covered in tan and seashell leather with Tiger motif headrests and Moccasser ebony veneers, moccasin lambswool floor mats and bespoke Tiger Phantom Coupe treadplates.

Both the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe Tiger and Ghost Golf Edition follow hot on the heels of the 1001 Nights edition of the Ghost that was introduced in the UAE just weeks ago.

Mitsubishi's 2016 iMiev will remain cheapest electric car, starting at $22,995

Detroit: Mitsubishi's 2016 iMiev will remain the cheapest electric car on the market when it goes on sale in the U.S. next month.

The tiny four-seater starts at $22,995, the same as the previous model year. With a $7,500 federal tax credit, the price drops to $15,495.

Standard features include heated front seats, remote keyless entry and an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the battery pack.

The iMiev was introduced in 2011. Two years later, Mitsubishi dropped its price by $5,000 to ensure it would be cheaper than newer entries like the electric Chevrolet Spark.

But the car hasn't been a big seller. Mitsubishi sold 196 iMievs in the U.S. last year, down 81 percent from the previous year. By comparison, Nissan sold more than 30,000 electric Leaf sedans.

    2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLE63 unveiled

Mercedes-Benz has phased out the ML nomenclature in their mid size SUV for a more standardised GLE-Class moniker. Apart from a new badge though, the new GLE also gets a facelift just like on the recently launched Mercedes-Benz B-Class. The new GLE also gets upgrades to its mechanical side making it more powerful and of course more fuel efficient than ever before.

On the exterior front, the GLE feature a new set of headlamps and a larger more angular grille than before. The grille with its twin slat design and centrally mounted three-pointed-star though still is reminiscent of the older ML’s striking design elements. The trademark angular C-pillar and large tail lamps still remain though although the tail lamps have been reworked to make them look more modern and up to date. The GLE also gets LED headlamps for the first time further improving the GLE’s appeal. The AMG version on the other hand gets a more aggressive front bumper and wider wheel arches that fuse into each other seamlessly. The front bumper in particular remind us of the design trend that was started by the likes of the E63 AMG a few years ago. The rear bumper too is more pronounced on the AMG version with the quad exhaust pipes taking centre stage.

The interior gets updated too with an even larger screen than before which is now partially integrated into the instrument panel. The air vents too have been encased with a classy silver surround which in turn is set into the gloss black dashboard itself. The GLE is also available in a variety to trim options such as open-pore brown ash wood or the shiny wood types like brown eucalyptus, black poplar or brown burred walnut. Younger and especially sporty minded customers can also choose high-quality AMG carbon-fibre trim with a sporty seat leather combination.

On the mechanical front, the GLE in India will be available with a choice of two diesel engines : the GLE 250d and the GLE 350d. The GLE 250d gets an output of 207Ps of peak power while the GLE 350d makes 262PS of peak power and 620Nm of peak torque. The GLE will also come with a range topping GLE63 AMG version in India with a 5.5-litre twin turbo V8 engine making close to 593Ps of peak power and a soundtrack that can raise the dead. All engines will come mated to Mercedes-Benz’s all-new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed dual clutch gearbox.

    Honda S660 roadster unveiled

The Honda S660 has been officially unveiled in Japan and is set to go on sale there on April 2. The S660 will be available in a standard variant and a special edition called the S660 Concept Edition, of which only 660 units will be made.

The S660 is powered by a 660cc 63bhp three-cylinder turbocharged engine sending power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or a seven-speed CVT transmission. The S660 will become the first ‘kei’ car to get six-speed transmission.

Honda claims that the car will give an exciting experience to drivers with its mid-engine rear-wheel-drive set-up and 45:55 front and rear weight distribution. The S660 also features an Agile Handling Assist electronic control system which uses brake torque to apply control in accordance with the movement of the vehicle body, thereby making cornering easier.

The company also claims that the S660 roadster will sound like a typical sports car, thanks to sound tuning techniques to the breathing and exhaust sounds of the engine.

The Concept Edition will sport features from the pre-production study, such as the Bordeaux red roll-top, two-tone side mirrors, exhaust pipe finisher with exclusive coating, water-repellent body coating “Ultra Glass Coating NEO” and interior tweaks.

Aston Martin DB9 successor being developed

The new Aston Martin DB9, scheduled to be available in global markets in 2016, has been spotted undergoing tests.  If the manufacturers will retain the DB nomenclature or come up with a new one is still unclear.

The appearance is that of a slightly modified current DB9. The mule appeared to be testing chassis and internal components. With an all-new bonded aluminium platform, the DB9 will be powered by a new twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre AMG V8 motor. The engine will be mated to Mercedes’ new nine-speed automatic transmission. The new V8 will develop 503bhp and 66.2kgm of torque.

“There’ll be a little more revolution in it. It will be unmistakably an Aston and a DB at that, but it will look fresh and modern”, said Aston Martin design director, Marek Reichman said about the shape of the new car.

Although AMG will not deliver a bespoke version for Aston, it will alter existing engines to respond like an Aston Martin engine. Bespoke engine management, exhaust systems and modified turbo-boost pressures is expected.

    2016 Jaguar XF unveiled

The original XF's sleek exterior and luxurious interior made it a desirable, aspirational vehicle. Now, Jaguar has launched an all-new version of the XF which aims at boosting the appeal and of course sales of the car to a new level. Featuring a dramatic high wire crossing stunt that saw the XF cross the river in London’s business district, the XF will essentially go up against the Mercedes E-Class, the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series in India.

The new Jaguar XF is built mainly out of aluminium making it 190kg lighter than the outgoing model with an added 28 percent stiffness in the body shell. Though 7mm shorter and 3mm lower than the car it replaces, the all-new XF's 2960mm wheelbase is 51mm longer, enabling a claimed class-leading rear seat space with more legroom, kneeroom and headroom. The front features a design language that seems to be derived from the XE sedan with a sharper and more aggressive design combined with a large grille and big air intakes in the bumper. Around the back, the XE inspired language continues with large horizontal tail lamps with lighting elements that have been inspirited from the F-type.

The all-new Jaguar XF’s engine range complements the efficiency gains inherent in the lightweight aluminium construction. The 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engines are available in 163PS of peak power and 380Nm of peak torque and 180PS of peak power and 430Nm of peak torque depending on the state of tune that is offered to customers. There will also be a 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 300PS and 700Nm and a petrol engine of similar displacement making 380Ps and 450Nm from its supercharged motor.

Jaguar gives glimpse of next-gen XF

Jaguar has released a top down picture and interior shot of the next-generation XF before its public debut at the New York car show on April 1.

The image reveals sharper creases on the bodywork, a sculpted bonnet with a power bulge, flared wheel arches, pronounced shoulder lines and a raked rear windshield that merges neatly into a squatter tail. The new XF's footprint is bigger than the current model's and it will also feature a scaled-up version of the XE’s grille.

On the inside, the car sports a similar styling theme to the smaller XE but is more upmarket. The interior features a large infotainment system, recessed air-vents and wide centre console with Jaguar’s traditional rotary gear selector.

The new XF will be the second Jaguar after the XE to be based on the firm’s scalable, aluminium-intensive iQ [Al] platform. Even though the new XF is expected to be slightly larger than the current car – to address rear legroom and boot space concerns – with significant weight saving measures on the new chassis, it's likely to weigh up to 100kg less.

The car will be powered by JLR's new 2.0-litre Ingenium turbo-diesel engine along with the range from the existing model. Jaguar has also said that the current XFR and XFR-S will also be replaced although engine details are yet to be provided.

The new XF will make its public debut on April 1 at the New York car show. However, the car will be seen in full online on the evening of March 24, when the car will be driven by British stuntman Jim Dowdall over two 34mm diametre wires high above water.

The stunt drive by the man who’s driven in James Bond and Indiana Jones films, among others, is designed to showcase the XF’s lightweight credentials.

    Renault reveals Kadjar SUV

The Geneva Motor Show is about to commence next month, but Renault seems to have already set the mood for new unveils and launches by taking the wraps off the Kadjar SUV. Thanks to the Nissan-Renault alliance, the Kadjar shares a lot of its components with the Nissan Qashqai SUV.

The engine options will be the same as the Qashai, with the Kadjar being offered in 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre diesel mills and it will be based on the Nissan-Renault CMF platform. The crossover will be offered in both 4x2 and 4x4 variants, with the All-wheel drive featuring a very familiar Auto, Lock and 2WD modes. Renault claims that thanks to an approach angle of 18 degrees and a departure angle of 25 degrees the Kadjar will be an efficient off-roader too.

The Kadjar has a bold front grille that flaunts the large Renault badge in the centre. The curvy bonnet and the sharp headlights give it a touch of aggression. At the back, the Kadjar isn’t as bold as it is from the front. On the inside, the company says the dashboard has been given a sporty look all with a 7-inch TFT touchscreen and Renault’s very own R-link multimedia system. The Kadjar gets a navigation system, voice command Bluetooth telephony and more.

Nissan would build the Daimler-designed pickup based on Navara architecture with Daimler providing technology including four- and six-cylinder powertrains, the Wall Street Journal reported, quoting two people familiar with the situation..

The report said talks between the two automakers on the project were at an advanced stage, but quoted a source as saying that the details are “still being worked out.”

    Mitsubishi readies Ertiga rival

Mitsubishi has announced that it is currently developing a MPV rival for the Maruti Ertiga and Honda Mobilio. It is expected to launch in Indonesia first in 2017.

Mitsubishi, along with the announcement, also released a silhouette of the MPV under development. However, it only shows the side body of the MPV along with the window line. The MPV is expected to be based on the Mitsubishi Concept AR that was showcased at the Geneva Motor Show last year.

    Porsche’s Boxster Spyder revealed

Porsche has unveiled its most powerful Boxster Spyder at the New York Auto Show. The Spyder, unlike the Boxster GTS, gets a 911-sourced 3.8-litre flat-six engine generating 370bhp and 42.72kgm of torque.

Porsche claims that the Boxster Spyder weighs a 100kg less than the GTS, allowing it to achieve a 0-100kph sprint time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 290kph. In comparison, the GTS does the 0-100kph sprint in 5.0 seconds and has a top speed of 281kph.

The new Spyder also gets a host of mechanical upgrades. The car gets updated brakes from the 911 Carrera, a sports suspension and sits 20mm lower than other Boxster versions. However, to lose the extra weight, the standard car gives features such as sat nav and air-con a miss. However, these options can be added at no extra cost.

When it comes to styling, the Boxster Spyder’s most notable feature is its new roof. As with the previous-generation Spyder, the lightweight fabric roof is opened and closed manually, although it is released electrically (as is the rear deck), to make the process more user-friendly.

The car also gets classic styling cues like the streamlined bulges on the rear lid that extend from the seat headrests — a feature seen on the 1960s Porsche 718 Spyder. The front and rear end design has been borrowed from the Cayman GT4.

McLaren 675LT supercar to debut at Geneva

Geneva always gets the best Europe has to offer, especially when it comes to sports cars. McLaren for the 2015 Geneva Motor Show has a Longtail Version of the 650S, christened the 675LT.

As the name suggests, the 675LT will be longer than the 650S and Asia-only 625C. Despite an addition in length, the 675LT, according to the British Supercar maker, will be the lightest, the quickest, and the purest version in the range. Weight reduction aside, McLaren has also worked on improving aerodynamics of the 675LT and has increased downforce, which we suppose will be courtesy a massive rear wing.

The 675LT will be the flagship in the McLaren Super Series when the Series is launched in the second half of 2015. If you haven’t guessed it by now, the 675LT makes 675PS of power, 25PS more than the 650S and it will be a lot more track focused. Further performance figures will be revealed closer to its global unveiling in March. Expect torque in the range of 700Nm, a sub 3 second 0-100kmph sprint and a top speed around 330kmph.

Suzuki iK-2 and iM-4 concepts leaked ahead of Geneva show

Suzuki had earlier released teaser images of the two concept cars that it will unveil at the Geneva motor show 2015. Now, images resembling the Suzuki iM-4 and iK-2 concepts have been leaked prior to their global debut at the show next week.

The iM-4 is a compact SUV that rivals the likes of the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster in terms of size. But, mind you, this is not the new compact SUV that Maruti is developing for our markets. Maruti’s compact SUV has been spotted testing, and it seems different from the Suzuki iM-4 concept.

The iK-2, on the other hand, is a crossover. It is larger than the Swift, and rivals cars like the Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross and Volkswagen Cross Polo. This car comes across as the YRA hatchback, which Maruti is developing, and has also been spotted testing on Indian roads. Maruti’s crossover will also rival the upcoming Hyundai i20 Active.

Suzuki says the iK-2 concept has been developed with the theme of ‘harmonised force' and “raises compact car values to their limit”. As for the iM-4, Suzuki describes it as “an iconic mini 4x4”, and says that it will come with “distinctive styling that will give real inspiration to drivers”.

New Mercedes Benz GLC SUV takes shape

The Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV has been spotted testing on international roads.
The pictures reveal the GLC's new grille and headlights, with some chrome detailing. From the rear, new tail-lights are visible, along with a newly refreshed boot.

The GLC will come in a right-hand-drive configuration for the first time, highly placed company sources have confirmed to sister publication Autocar UK. In line with Mercedes’ new nomenclature, the new car will now be badged GLC rather than GLK.

It has been developed in a joint engineering programme with the new C-class and shares crucial elements of that car’s platform, drivelines and technical features. Codenamed X253, the new high-riding Mercedes aims to provide stiff competition for the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and the upcoming Land Rover Discovery Sport. First used on the latest C-class, the new GLC’s modular platform provides scope for the production of both left- and right-hand-drive variants, thanks to a newly engineered driveshaft arrangement for the front wheels that preserves right-hand footwell space.

Stylistically, the latest GLC is a radical departure from its predecessor. Gone are the square-edged military vehicle-inspired lines. They have been replaced by a much more expressive exterior design that has strong links to the latest C-class, with more heavily raked screen angles. The sleeker styling also extends to the five-seat cabin. There is a swoopy dashboard similar to the one on the latest C-class, complete with a free-standing multimedia monitor. The steering wheel, instruments, switchgear, trim and seats are all according to the latest Mercedes design.

The GLC will be manufactured in Mercedes-Benz factories in Germany, United States and China, and will be sold with a range of longitudinally mounted in-line four-cylinder and V6 petrol and diesel engines, all brought over from the new C-class range. The turbocharged petrol and diesel engines will be mated to either a standard seven or nine-speed automatic gearbox. Buyers will also be offered a choice of rear or four-wheel drive depending on the engine they choose.
