Maruti Suzuki's Upcoming Cars Will Be Highly Fuel Efficient
According to a report published in Business Standard, Maruti Suzuki is working on low-cost hybrid technology for the new-generation Swift. Though the launch might not take place before 2017, the Swift Hybrid could become a great option for the mileage-conscious buyers in India.
To be able to keep the prices of hybrid vehicles affordable in India, Maruti Suzuki might produce engines in India instead of importing them from Japan. Since India lacks charging infrastructure and the government might take years to take measures to remedy that situation, Maruti Suzuki will work on hybrid cars instead of pure electric ones.
Other than the hybrid vehicles, the company is also working on some other highly frugal engines to power its cars in the future. One such engine will be an 800cc diesel unit that will power the Celerio; it will be the nation's most fuel-efficient powertrain. The report further says that MSI is working on a 1.0-litre turbocharged unit too and it will be based on the existing 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine. This engine might be used in the export version of the upcoming YRA hatchback, and might later be launched in India as well.
Just so you know, the Indo-Japanese carmaker had unveiled the Swift Range Extender, a hybrid version of the current generation model, at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. The vehicle featured a 658cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine combined with an electric motor. Interestingly, the company had claimed the Swift Hybrid to return a mind-boggling mileage of 48.2Km/l. However, the Swift Range Extender will be supplied to the government of India for a pilot project. So, there is a high probability that Maruti might develop this model only for the government and not for the general public.
